Installation Guidelines For Box Manholes and Chambers

Site Conditions:

The installation site must be accessible to large, heavy trucks weighing up to sixty tonnes. Where possible, the construction area should be free of trees, branches, wires, or parts of buildings which could interfere with the delivery, unloading, and installation of the concrete structure.

Excavation:
Prior to excavation, all buried utilities should be located. Excavations should be made with a moderate clearance around the installed structure. More space should be provided, as needed, to comply with construction safety requirements.
Excavated material should be stockpiled a sufficient distance from the excavation or as per Consulting Engineer so as to not impair the movement of the installation equipment.

Bedding:
Bedding material should be provided on a site specific basis with careful attention to Consultants recommendations and local municipal standards. To provide a uniform bearing surface and to ensure that the structure will not be subject to adverse settlement, a bedding of 150mm (6") of 20mm to 25mm (3/4" to 1") stone is generally sufficient. After placing the stone, it must be compacted and levelled. Special attention should be made that there are no large stones or rocks that could cause pressure points under the bottom of the installed structure.
Sites with silty soils, high water tables or other "poor" bearing characteristics must have specially designed bedding or bearing surfaces. In the event of excess excavation, any backfill to be replaced should be granular and well compacted.

Lifting:
Box Manholes should only be lifted at the installed lift points. A lifting harness incorporating cable or chains and spreader bars should be used.

Joint Seals:
Care must be taken with joint seals on box manholes. High quality preformed joint seals must be placed on dry, carefully cleaned surfaces, free of sand and grit, at the structure's joint. Seals shall meet minimum compression and other installation requirements as prescribed by the seal manufacturer. Box sections should be allowed to settle on joints before backfilling.

Backfilling:
Structures should be evenly backfilled in equal, compacted lifts. Water should be pumped out of the hole to prevent floatation until the structure is backfilled. Backfilled material should consist of compacted granulars or as prescribed by the Engineer or contract documents.

Design:
All products are designed to meet specific needs. Therefore, an Anchor representative should be consulted to verify that the product you have chosen is best suited for your application.
